Walkway markers installed in Glasgow

June 26, 2015

The Trust is delighted to report that all 35 of the bronze markers have been installed on the Commonwealth Walkway in Glasgow, making it the first complete Commonwealth Walkway in the world!

Thanks are especially due to the enthusiasm of Louise Martin, Chair of Sport Scotland and Hon Sec of The Commonwealth Games Federation, who has been a key champion locally and internationally of the initiative.  Louise secured a partnership for the Trust with both The City of Glasgow and Scottish Government who were quick to back the scheme in advance of the one year anniversary of hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Under the direction of Andy Waddell, Head of Infrastructure Services at Glasgow City Council, and his highly competent team. the markers were installed within a week from the green light.  Andy helped secure permissions from landowners and neighbouring highway authorities in record time, including Gordon Mackay, Head of Roads & Transportation Services at South Lanarkshire Council, who agreed to the Rutherglen Town Hall marker on the Friday and it was installed with the support of Colin McWilliams at 9am the next working day!

A special mention too goes to Stuart Dillett, the Managing Director at Land Engineering, who donated his company's time and considerable expertise to make sure all of the installations were perfect.  The team on the ground was led by two of the industrys most experienced surface-quality engineers, Alan Greenlaw and team mate Tony McGhee.  Alan has worked with Land Engineering for more than 25 years on projects all over the world and it is easy to see why he is in such demand.  In an extrodinary demonstration of his commitment to quality Alan went out at 5am every day to check the markers he had already installed before then starting a full days work on the ones remaining. Thank you team Glasgow - we can see why your City strap line is 'People Make Glasgow' !
