Commonwealth Games Federation Oceania VP visits London

January 25, 2016

The Outdoor Trust was delighted to host Hugh Graham, Cook Islands Commownealth Games Association President and Vice President of The Commonwealth Games Federation for Oceania, in London yesterday.

Hugh, was passing through London enroute to a Commonwealth Games Federation Executive meeting in Gibraltar, and stopped off to catch up with the Trust and see our first two Walkways in the capital.

Hugh has been a great champion of Commonwealth Walkways ever since Lousie Martin, now President of The Commonwealth Games Federation,  kindly invited the Trust to speak at the CGF Annual Assembly in Glasgow 2014.  Once Hugh got back to the Cooks he spoke with His Excellency Tom Marsters, The Queen's Represenative for the Islands, and witihn a few months Hugo and Jim had visited and agreed a spectacular route.

Jim went back to The Cook Islands in August, for the 50 year Independence anniversary celebrations and was delighted that The QR, Ministers and the Consular General Rosie Blake joined to install the first marker outside the Ministry of Justice in Rarotonga.

It was Hugh's first visit to London and he was thrilled that so many of the features he wanted to see were joined up by the Trust's official Walks.  In particular Hugh visited Buckingham Palace, to see where the first foundation marker of the Jubilee Greenway was unveiled by Her Majesty The Queen on 29 February 2012 in celebration of her Diamond Jubilee.  He then also saw several of the Trust's interpretation panels including one by the Palace unveiled by HRH The Duke of Gloucester in celebration of the 40 Wedding Anniversary of The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.   A simmilar panel is planned for outside the Ministry building in Rarotonga to promote the Cook Island Commonwealth Walkway.

When passes back through England, on his return trip, the Trust look forward to sharing with him The Queens Walkway in Windsor later this month.
