The Trust has been in Antigua for the past week, kindly hosted by the Antigua National Parks Commission in English Harbour. The visit is the fourth Caribbean country to welcome the Trust since October. We are thrilled that 23 Walkways have already been requested from those we have visited so far and that 4 are already mapped. Thanks to the enthusiasm of the team locally in Antigua, impressively, this one will be the first officially started with a marker in the ground.
The Trust met His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, The Governor General, on Tuesday who was quick to agree in principle. The Hon Amos Michael, Minister for Tourism, Economic Development and Investment, then gave the Government's endorsement and Lt. Col. Edward Croft, Chairman of the National Parks Commission, further requested that his competent team, led by Commissioner Anne-Marie Martin, help make the Walkway an immediate reality.
Dr Reg Murphy, The UNESCO representative for Antigua, gave the Trust an expert guided tour of the historic English Harbour area and together 35 points of significance were soon drafted and connected by a 15km potential Walkway route. The team were pleased that the 35 points also symbolises 35 years of independence for the country.
Jim Walker, Trust CEO, said: “Many visitors come to English Harbour, but few spend longer than a few minutes looking round. We are creating a route with 35 points of interest to encourage them to explore the beauty and the history of the National Park. We hope the Commonwealth Walkway will encourage them to spend some days here, enjoying the experience to the full. It will be well worth it.”
